## What is Peppol and why is it relevant now?

Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line) is an international, highly secure network that enables businesses and public authorities to exchange electronic documents automatically. Whereas a standard invoice is often sent as a PDF via email, transactions via Peppol take place entirely digitally in a structured format (UBL). Invoices are delivered directly from the sender’s accounting system to the recipient’s accounting system.

The days of individual invoices in email inboxes and manual OCR checks are coming to an end. Public authorities and semi-public institutions have long required their suppliers to use e-invoicing via Peppol. In addition, legislation is rapidly extending to the wider business sector (B2B), both within the Netherlands and at European level via the ViDA guidelines (VAT in the Digital Age).
